The flagship department, devoted to the natural world as it was described with confidence before 1900. Sea serpents on charts, geese from barnacles, lambs from vines, and life arising from nothing in particular are all on the syllabus. The College Antimachus holds a faculty appointment here. Holdings are drawn from period engravings and reproduced without correction.

Courses offered: MARINE MONSTERS: FIELD IDENTIFICATION. SPONTANEOUS GENERATION: A LABORATORY. COMPARATIVE AVIAN MORTALITY (ORN 340).
